REVIEW: The San Diego Union-Tribune: La Jolla Playhouse’s ‘The Garden’ a deep and powerful return to live performance For 90 magical minutes on Sunday, La Jolla Playhouse’s season-opening world premiere of Charlayne Woodard’s play held the audience suspended in pin-drop silence. Theater-goers leaned forward in their seats to catch every word, they audibly gasped at several reveals in the story and leapt to their feet to applaud before the actors came out for their bows. Due to popular demand, Primary Stages are offering an encore presentation of THE NIGHT WATCHER available for streaming on demand. Charlayne’s auto-biographical, one-woman play was originally presented at 59E59 Theaters in our 2009/2010 Season. Simultaneously a best friend, advisor, confidant, and sage to the many young people who call her “Auntie,” Charlayne Woodard is childless only by biological standards. Told with penetrating grace and candor, Woodard beautifully weaves together stories of the ordinary and extraordinary ways she has mentored the children in her life. Declared “thoughtful, vivid, entertaining, and poignant” in its original run, THE NIGHT WATCHER is an intimate look at the various definitions of parenthood.

The Night Watcher Opens At Primary Stages In New York, Reviews Are In!!!!!
"Good lighting is even more necessary onstage than it is in life. But a few fortunate actors require little in the way of flattering illumination. Instead of reflecting light, their faces seem to emit it.
Charlayne Woodard is among them. I don’t want to steal any credit from her lighting designer, Geoff Korf, but in her latest solo performance, “The Night Watcher,” Ms. Woodard roams the stage of the 59E59 Theaters like a human searchlight, casting a permanent glow that reaches all the way to the back rows.
Perhaps a porch light is a better analogy, for Ms. Woodard is a performer as warm and inviting as she is luminous. In “The Night Watcher,” presented by Primary Stages, she tells ta les of her many brushes with near-motherhood, inflecting each with the mixture of exuberant feeling and sly humor that have marked her three previous autobiographical shows. (You might think Ms. Woodard would be running dry of stories by now, but she seems to be a woman who collects colorful experience the way the rest of us pile up cans and bottles for the recycling bin.) - New York Times (Isherwood) (Read full review more)
"Charlayne Woodard's new solo piece, "The Night Watcher," lands in town polished to a high shine after regional showings at Seattle Rep, La Jolla and the Ojai Playwrights Conference. Calling up her own experiences, the childless thesp recounts how she assumed the role of "Auntie" -- with its attendant duties of friend, confidante and meddling substitute mom -- to her friends' kids. Protean performer gives voice to all her charges, from squalling infants to troubled teens, along with their hapless, harried, often clueless parents. Each story, hilarious or heartbreaking, speaks to the joy and sadness of being Auntie to many, mother to none. " - Daily Variety (Read full review more)

"Charlayne Woodard's new solo show The Night Watcher, playing at 59E59 Theaters, not only features some marvelous storytelling, it also give some terrific insight into the sort of unconditional love it takes to rear a child in today's world.
